It is with great sadness that we report the sudden and unexpected death of the leader of the movement to forever memorialize Harry Kalas and the amazingly talented sculptor of the Harry Kalas Memorial Statue. Lawrence Nowlan, 48, was a supremely gifted artist, capturing the essence of people whom he admired and respected. Beyond the legions of fans of the legendary Philadelphia Phillies' announcer, Nolwlan's figurative work touched millions of people around the globe. N also created the famous National Wildland Firefighters Monument in 2000. The beloved statue of Ralph Kramden at the entrance to New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal was sculpted by Nowlan in 2000 and is seen by thousands every day. In 2001, he sculpted the VH1 Music and ESPN Espy Awards.
In 2007, after years of study and work, Nowlan unveiled massive tributes to 1939 Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick at the University of Iowa. He created impressive iconic installations for the Woods Hole Marine Lab and bas relief portraits for the Culinary Institute of America featuring the Nation's best chef's and vintners. Nowlan created many other memorials, reliefs and figurative representations for patrons around the world. Nowlan sculpted from an archetypal New England church in Windsor, Vermont. The pews had all been removed and replaced with armatures of all sizes. Clay, plaster and bronze figures– studies for fun or for commissions– comprised the congregation where natural light streamed through to illuminate the work and the worker. He lived only a few miles from the studio, across the Connecticut River in Cornish New Hampshire with his beautiful wife Heather and children, Monet and Teelin.
Born and raised in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia, Nowlan comes from a large and loving family that includes four sisters and two brothers and scores of friends from the neighborhood and all over the city. Affectionately called 'Doobie' by all who knew and loved him, the artist was working on a monument to Joe Frazier at the time of his death. Both men shared a love for their hometown of Philadelphia and indomitable spirit that made the rest of us better for knowing them.
I have personally known Doobie for more than thirty years– we were college roommates– and he has been an inspiration and encouragement in my own art as he consistently was with the work of his many friends and colleagues. I feel so fortunate to have worked with him on the Harry Kalas Memorial Statue, a labor of love for the artist that will now be as much a public tribute to him as it is to the subject. All of Doobie's work is extremely impressive and you will recognize glimpses of the artist in each monument. I encourage you to seek it out and enjoy these intimate portraits that our friend created. This was rare talent from a rare individual and we are all better human beings for having known Lawrence Joseph Nowlan, Jr. TP July 31, 2013.
